Driving ban for footballer caught at 156mph on A1 at Sawtry - Newmarket Journal

A Cambridge United footballer has been banned from driving for speeding on the A1(M) near Peterborough at 156mph - the fastest speed recorded in Britain in three years. Jordan Slew, (22), who plays for Cambridge United, was going so fast in his BMW M4 that police struggled to catch him over three miles. Cambridge Magistrates Court heard Slew was banned for speeding on a motorway three years ago when he lost this licence for three months. Paul Brown, prosecuting, told magistrates in Cambridge that police saw the car speeding around 11. 15pm on March 3. The patrolman put his blue lights on and began to follow the driver - who was travelling at 156mph in lane 4 - but wasn’t gaining... He chased the £57,000 car for three miles at a constant speed but he was only able to catch him when another car weaved into the lane and forced Slew to slow to 130mph. Mr Brown said that the road wasn’t clear the whole time during the offence. Slew, of Newmarket, Suffolk, pleaded guilty to speeding and was banned for six months and fined £1,400. Ben Rowe, mitigating, said: “He has absolutely no excuse. The offence came just a month after Slew signed an 18-month deal with League Two side Cambridge United following his release by Blackburn Rovers. “He put many other road users at risk by travelling at this speed.
