” That’s the heart and soul of “Stoop Is a Verb” — a performance presented by City of Asylum/Pittsburgh on Saturday. Jazz saxophonist and composer Oliver Lake is co-founder of the World Saxophone Quartet, and is well known for his work with that ensemble as well as Trio 3. He has worked with City of Asylum/Pittsburgh for the past decade, leading the annual Jazz... Like those performances, “Stoop Is a Verb” combines jazz and spoken word while celebrating the North Side’s unique personality. Saturday’s performance is the fruit of Mr. Lake’s yearlong residency. In February 2014, Mr. Lake and Marty McGough of Campos Research Strategy interviewed members of various North Side community groups, including the Fair Housing Coalition, Gwen’s Girls, the Mexican War Streets Society, Young Men and Women’s African... They answered a series of questions: “What words or images come to mind when you hear the word ‘North Side. ” And “What are the things that bind the community together, and the key issues dividing the community. The sessions were recorded, and Mr. Lake took the transcripts and wove them into words and music, creating a conversation between neighbors who may be strangers but who share common ground on the North Side.
