Combat reporter Joe Galloway attends post's viewing of 'We Were Soldiers' - The Killeen Daily Herald

The movie, adapted from a book written by the unit’s then-commander, retired Lt. Gen. Hal Moore, and combat reporter Joe Galloway, tell first-hand of the first major battle in the American phase of the Vietnam War in the Ia Drang Valley of Vietnam. Galloway, a Texas resident, attended last week’s viewing of the movie, clearly seeming at home among 1st Cavalry Division soldiers young and old. Galloway said it’s hard to believe 50 years have passed since his experience in the battle. Bob Barker, a 1st Cavalry Division veteran and friend of Galloway’s, also fought in the Ia Drang Valley. He served with the 1st Cav during two of his three tours to Vietnam, and like Galloway, said watching the film still gets to him today, though he believes it holds significant lessons for active-duty soldiers. If they’ve even had some inkling of the book, they’ll see what leadership is all about, and Moore exhibited that kind of leadership.
