Suspect shot by police had mental issues, mother says - Toledo Blade

When Nettie Taylor heard sirens blare Saturday evening from her Prospect Avenue home, she called out for her son. Instead, Ms. Taylor went to sleep believing her son may leave to run errands for her as he often did. But rather than run errands for his mother, police said Mr. Taylor, 53, of 1543 Buckingham St. was behind the wheel of a car that struck a woman around 5 p. m. in Central Toledo and a man minutes later in North Toledo. Taylor later pinned a responding police officer with his car, officers fired in self defense and struck him several times, police said. “I know he was wrong to drive like that, but to get shot like that — he hadn’t robbed anybody, he hadn’t killed anybody,” Ms. Taylor said. Nettie Taylor said her son has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. “He never got married, never had a family, because he always said he had to take care of me and daddy. Taylor, a graduate of Scott High School, would not have hit the pedestrians if he regularly took his medicine, his mother said. Toledo police officers in the past knew of Mr. Taylor's mental illness and treated him fairly. Life will be difficult while Mr. Taylor fights to recover, his mother said. Source: www.toledoblade.com
