Man shot in Louisa County pursuit near Fruitland, IA - KWQC-TV6

LOUISA COUNTY, Iowa (KWQC) – There was an officer involved shooting late last night after a vehicle pursuit. People around the Louisa-Muscatine County area say they’re shocked after hearing about last night’s incident. Curiosity and rumors spread around the quiet community of Fruitland today, as people were trying to figure out exactly what happened. She works nearby where it happened at the Shell gas station off of Highway 61. She said she usually hears what happens in town from her customers, but today’s news seems to be a mystery. “All we’ve heard that earlier this morning on highway 61 and Fruitland Road going into Fruitland that there was several police cars and they had the road blocked,” said Norris. The Division of Criminal Investigation said Louisa County deputies tried to stop 55 year old Richard Spurling of Muscatine, for traffic violations before midnight last night. Officials said Spurling tried to get away and drove his vehicle toward an approaching Louisa County deputy. Spurling was heading in a north-easterly direction on Stewart Road, when he turned west onto Fruitland Road. “Next thing I knew they were calling out a fire department ambulance to assist,” said Fruitland resident Adam White.
