Motorcyclist remembered following fatal crash - Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier

Nicholas Paul Hursh, 56, of Parkersburg, was riding a motorcycle on Iowa Highway 3 near Hampton when he was hit head-on by a Chevrolet Monte Carlo that had crossed the center line, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The Monte Carlo driver allegedly told authorities he thought he fell asleep behind the wheel, and the crash remains under investigation. Many people remember Nicholas Hursh, a former Cedar Falls resident, as Nick the Knife, a member of the Sons of Silence motorcycle gang who served time for manslaughter and racketeering. Nicholas Hursh was born in Marengo, the son of a World War II and Korean War veteran who operated an agricultural aviation business. Authorities said Nicholas Hursh stabbed his friend, Duane Niedert, 27, in the heart in Niedert’s mobile home April 21, 1988, because he was upset about drug use in the Cedar Falls trailer. Nicholas was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and placed on work release in 1990.
