McAllen halves monthly rent for bus companies to spur competition - Monitor

On Monday, city commissioners approved halving the amount bus companies pay in monthly rent at the downtown bus station from $1,021 to $511. While commissioners initially opposed the cut, McAllen City Manager Roy Rodriguez said at least one bus... “We’re trying to entice others to bring competition to the bus terminal,” he said Monday. Two companies service the station now, and three are interested in applying, said Mario Delgado, the city’s transit director. The main route is from the Hidalgo International Bridge to McAllen’s downtown station. According to a city memo, about $6,000 would be lost in city revenue if the other companies didn’t sign on, but the loss would be offset if they did. City staff first proposed the cut at commissioners’ May 26 meeting, but it was tabled after commissioners wanted to know what other border cities charged for monthly rent. But Delgado said Monday that McAllen’s terminal was hard to compare to other cities because of its location. “On top of that, we have a city between us. We need a service that doesn’t apply to any other municipality on the border. org/documents/2095891-lease-agreement-bus-permits. Source: www.themonitor.com
