24th annual Angel of Shavano Car Show raises $15000 - Mountain Mail Newspaper

Sponsors of the car show included Salida Sunrise Rotary Club, Collegiate Peaks Bank, Salida Auto Sales and The Bridge at Alamosa. The Bridge at Alamosa sponsored the appearance of Elvis Presley impersonator Dennis Thornberry of Everywhere Elvis. This year the car show attracted 120 entries. The first 100 received plaques from the car show organizers. A favorite event at the car show is the engine meltdown in which a vehicle’s engine is drained of oil and water and run until it shuts down. Guesses as to how long the engine would run cost $1. Half the pot went to Chaffee County Search and Rescue, and half went to the winner making the closest guess. The engine of the 1995 Chevy 1600 LS Suburban kept running for 16 minutes, 18 seconds, sending up a cloud of smoke as the engine began to overheat. Janet Franz of Salida submitted the closest guess. She received her prize of $146 from “Elvis” and promptly donated her take back to Search and Rescue South. Al and Candy DeHerrera, Pueblo West, with a 1955 Chevrolet 2 door hard top.
