But, the team was pleased and most people know that I wasn’t in a front-running car and you have to do the best you can with the equipment you’ve got. Once we got the car adjusted after about 50 laps, the car was probably best in its class. In early stages of the race, however, Teague wasn’t happy with Busch. Trying to put Teague a lap down, Busch rammed the No. 13 car from behind and turned it sideways. Teague got the car straightened out and both drivers were able to continue, but Teague thought the move was unneccesary. “He caught me real quick, but part of that was because the cars ahead of me got tangled up 3-4 laps into the race and they didn’t throw the caution,” Teague said. Driving the No. 13 Toyota with local sponsors ABS building systems on the hood, JD Metals on the side and SCAG on the back bumper, the Johnson City driver started last in the 40-driver field. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” said Teague, who made 294 starts in NASCAR’s three national series. But, the situation won’t let me. But, I’ve been able to do it 48 years and I’ve loved it. It really surprises me that I’ve been able to do it as long as I have. Earlier in the day, Kyle Petty waxed nostalgic about watching Teague race in the old Late Model Sportsman Series and even in the Sprint Cup Series in the No. 31 Oldsmobile. The Sportsman Series, that’s where Dale Earnhardt learned to race, and Brad was one of the mainstays. Just like he said, I hate to give it up. He drove the Slender You car, that pink car back in the Cup Series. He is one of the cornerstones of the Xfinity Series, giving guys like Ryan Blaney an opportunity to race. Dale Jarrett, a former Cup Series champion and a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, finished second to Teague in the Johnson City driver’s lone Xfinity Series win in 1987. Once Teague qualifies for Friday’s race, he will join Morgan Shepherd as the only drivers to race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (formerly Busch Series) in both its inaugural season of 1982 and the present year. Teague made his first laps around Bristol Motor Speedway in 1971 in a car not exactly suited for a high-banked paved track. He has raced and tested a variety of cars ranging from Late Model Stocks to the Sprint Cup Series. “I don’t think they’ve kept up with the Sportsman stuff as much, or you look at all the testing I’ve done,” said Teague, who has eight Sprint Cup starts at Bristol. “The first time I ran up there was in 1971 in a dirt-track car I ran at Sportsman Speedway. I’ve got a lot of laps in Late Model Sportsman cars and when they brought the different Late Model Stock series to race up there, I did a lot of tire testing. Teague’s racing career started on the egg-shaped dirt oval at Johnson City’s Sportsman Speedway in 1967 and he was the champion in the six-cylinder division just one year later. He is also a former track champion at Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, Virginia, and three times, he finished runner-up in the Kingsport Speedway track championship standings.
