1949 2WD Willys Pickup - Wicked Willys: Part 6 - Four Wheeler Network

Well, we had to make sure the suspension was going to flex the way we thought it would before finalizing (and fully welding) important suspension parts like the track-bar mounts, steering, and more. That meant using an engine hoist, chains, and a jack to cycle the front suspension with one side resting metal-to-metal on one bumpstop, while the other side is drooped out the maximum length of the shock. We then checked for interference and turned the big 42-inch BFG KX tires on TrailReady beadlocks from steering stop to steering stop, noted what hit and what was close, and moved on to the other side. Once done, we pulled the front tires and wheels and removed the front axle so we could run it back over to Rob Bonney Fab in Peoria, Arizona. While there, Rob Bonney himself made us a few parts and finished TIG welding our axle brackets to our old GM Dana 60 front axle. Another benefit of cycling the suspension and taking some measurements was that we were finally able to get some coil springs and shocks ordered so that the big Jeep can soon cruise down the road and trail. To help deal with the extra weight of our Willys (remember that we are going to be using TJ coils and shock mounting locations, but a big-block V-8, 1-ton axles, extra body armor, and some great big ol’ tires), we contacted our friends down under... Toyota's Sienna is a fine people and cargo hauler that also offers all-wheel drive, making it perfect for wintry Wisconsin. My test van was a handsome Sky Blue Pearl, a silvery blue, Sienna XLE Premium with AWD. The split bench in back will seat three and folds neatly down into the van's cavernous cargo area to create a flat floor. Lower both seats and then fold the two center seats, and you've got 150 cubic feet of cargo area, much larger than a pickup's bed. This model features a power hatch, so with the push of a button on the key fob or dash, the hatch powers up, or down. The test van was loaded with options, including a 16. 4-inch fold-down screen for the rear seats' occupants. Up front there are dual climate controls and heated front seats that allow a wide range of control, not just two or three settings. Other pluses include a power sunroof, well laid out dash and easy-to-use touchscreen for the radio and navigation systems. The trip computer is digital between the main dash gauges, and there are big buttons and knobs on the center stack that are within quick reach and are well labeled. It sticks up fairly close to the steering wheel and I found myself hitting it when I reached for the windshield wiper lever that's to the wheel's right. Source: www.jsonline.com
