"Bought this 1998 Outback Limited brand new, held on to it with little to no problems for 17 years. At 150,000 miles, however, it had several oil leaks and began over heating. Unfortunately, I put more money into it to repair than I should because in the end of it all, it still needed another $1800 head gasket change to stop the coolant leak. I will be trading it in for something else. But, it was a great car in the rain, snow, cornering & power. I was so happy and comfortable with it!"

About the 1997 Subaru Legacy The Subaru Legacy began production in 1989 and is still being produced 22 years later. Also referred to as the Liberty, the Legacy is a mid-size automobile that is available in two distinct body styles: four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. From 1989 to 2009, the Legacy was offered as a four-door B" pillar hardtop, but that was discontinued with the introduction of the current fifth generation. The Legacy offers more than enough room for a family of five, and additional cargo space is provided in the wagon model.
The newest EZ series engines are available in the current Legacy generation, which produces up to 275 horsepower. This includes the optional six-speed manual transmission that adds to the overall power of the car. The Legacy is assembled in Ota, Japan for the Asian market and Lafayette, Indiana for the American market. Plenty of legroom is available for two backseat passengers and a third person could join the ride without cramping the space.
The Legacy was the inspiration of the Subaru Legacy Outback in 1995, a crossover version that was larger than the sedan but smaller than an average sport utility vehicle. The Legacy has been in production for five generations beginning with the first generation entering the market in 1989. As the generations progressed, the Legacy evolved from a small, box-shaped car to a sleek and powerful sedan. More options were added as time went on, including a completely new redesign for the 2011 model year.
The fifth generation was unveiled in 2009 at the New York Auto Show. The Touring Wagon was a Euro-spec model, while the roomy 2.5i sedan is the US version. The Legacy Wagon is only available as the Outback in the North American market. The center console features an electric handbrake with the most-used functions, such as the stereo volume knob and the climate control system, placed closer to the driver in the newer model.
Because the Subaru Legacy has been on the market for 22 years, it has received recognition from reviewers and won a few awards along the way. R. L. Polk & Company named the 1990 Legacy the #1 Selling Four-Wheel Drive Car in the US. By 2000, the Legacy was nominated for Motor Trend's Car of the Year Award, and Consumer Guide named it a Recommended Buy for 2000. The 2010 Legacy earned the Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
