    2013 smart fortwo Review

    By KBB.com Editors

    KBB Expert Rating: 3.5

When the Smart Fortwo debuted in 2008, America's smallest car garnered an instant following as buyers flocked to this 2-seater for its low price, good fuel economy, and the sheer Euro-chic factor it brought to our shores. The years since have not been so kind to Smart, a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. Since its launch, the Smart Fortwo has been met with mediocre reviews and dwindling sales. Additionally, better vehicles such as the Scion iQ, Chevrolet Spark and Fiat 500 have entered the microcar scene. Meanwhile, cars such as the Ford Fiesta and Nissan Versa offer comparable fuel economy and more room at a similar price. The 2013 Smart Fortwo coupe and cabriolet can sneak into the smallest parking spots, along with the newest member of the family, an all-electric model.

    You'll Like This Car If...

If finagling your car into the tiniest of parking spots is a daily difficulty, you'll appreciate the fact that the Smart Fortwo is the smallest new car in America. At just 106.1 inches in length, the Smart is less than half as long as a regular-cab Ford F-150.

You May Not Like This Car If...

The Fortwo's nervous highway manners and its unrefined automated transmission make driving feel like a chore rather than a privilege. Unless you're married to some facet of the Smart, there are plenty of compact and subcompact cars that offer far better road manners, more standard equipment, and seating for five.

    What's New for 2013

The biggest news for the Smart lineup is an all-new electric version. The plug-in Fortwo is more powerful and will goes farther per charge than its previous, limited-quantity EV version. The standard lineup sees the addition of two special editions and a Brabus sport package.

    Driving the fortwo

Driving Impressions For a vehicle with such a short wheelbase – a mere 73.5 inches – the 2013 Smart Fortwo's ride is surprisingly comfortable. However, the Fortwo's road manners become increasingly skittish...

as it leisurely gets up to speed. This car is no picnic on freeways. We also grew tired of having to make constant steering corrections to keep the Smart Fortwo on course. Then there is the Smart's automated manual transmission, which changes gears with all the grace of a farm tractor. A top speed of 90 mph and a 13-second 0-60 mph time combine to make the Smart Fortwo one of the slowest new vehicles on the road. If there's a silver lining, it's that you get to "floor it" on a regular basis, and no self-respecting cop would ever pull you over. There is one thing the Fortwo excels at: maneuverability. With its tiny footprint and turning radius of under 30 feet, the Smart Fortwo could be the easiest vehicle you've ever parked.

    Favorite Features

TINY TURNING RADIUSWith a 28.7-foot turning circle, you'd have to hop on a Schwinn to do better than the Smart. This enables the Fortwo to flip U-turns like nobody's business and slide into the tightest of parking spots.

TRIDION SAFETY CELLA (legitimate) concern about driving a car as small as a Smart is the potential to collide with a larger vehicle, which in the Fortwo's case is, well, any other vehicle except a Smart. To ease those worries is the Smart's high-strength steel cell. Inspired by racecar roll cages, it helps distribute energy if a crash occurs.

    2013 smart fortwo Details

    Interior

The old adage of "Never judge a book by its cover" is appropriate for the 2013 Smart Fortwo. Though tiny on the outside, the Smart's interior is surprisingly roomy. The Fortwo's tall shape creates ample headroom and legroom for two passengers, while the floating design of its dash adds to the cabin's sense of spaciousness. The Smart's rear cargo area is quite a bit smaller than that of a subcompact, but is large enough to swallow a bag of golf clubs. For further cargo flexibility, the passenger seat folds flat to carry additional items.

    Exterior

    2013 smart fortwo photo

With its almost toy-like size and shape, the Smart Fortwo looks like nothing else on the road. The Smart Fortwo has a tall profile, doors that take up the majority of its sides, and a long wheel-base relative to the car's actual length. Body panels are made of dent-resistant plastic, a plus for the shopping cart-laden urban environments for which the Smart is intended. On coupe models, the Fortwo's roof can be had as a conventional, solid one or as a large, see-through panel made from polycarbonate. Cabriolet models have an automatic soft-top that can be opened to various positions at any speed. Cabriolet models also have removable roof side bars for a more open experience, and a glass rear window housed within the fabric roof.

    Notable Equipment

    Standard Equipment

The Smart's base trim is dubbed Pure, but it might better be called Spartan because this model is so lacking in creature comforts most of us now take for granted in a new car. Forget not just having power windows – you'll have to crank your own – for its tempting starting price of around $13,000, you won't even get a radio. Air conditioning, too, is considered an option in this model, as is power steering. What you will get are power door locks and a 2-spoke leather steering wheel. Spending over $2,000 more and stepping up to the Passion model brings a panoramic roof, air conditioning, power windows, and yes, a radio with two speakers and a USB input. Safety features include eight airbags and stability control.

    Optional Equipment

Extras on the Pure trim model include an AM/FM radio with USB and auxiliary inputs, heated seats, air conditioning, power steering, and cruise control. Passion models can be made more passionate with a navigation system, heated leather seats, Bluetooth, cruise control, power steering, and LED running lights.

    Under the Hood

The 2013 Smart Fortwo is powered by a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder Mitsubishi engine that makes 70 horsepower. That isn't a lot of power, but at less than 1,900 pounds, the Smart doesn't have much mass to move. The engine is located in the rear of the Smart and, unlike most other small cars of its ilk, drives the rear wheels. The sole transmission is a very unrefined 5-speed automated manual. Highway fuel economy on the Smart is rated up to 38 mpg. That figure is good, but you might expect better from such a tiny vehicle. Also note, the Smart Fortwo uses premium gasoline. The all-electric Smart uses a 55-kilowatt motor powered by lithium-ion batteries, and has been rated by the EPA to achieve the equivalent of up to 122 mpg in city driving.

This review was written when the 2013 Smart Fortwo was new.

If you want a small car for the city and only need seating for two, reviewers think the 2013 Smart Fortwo is a decent choice. However, some say the Fortwo’s lack of standard features and sluggish, unrefined performance are very unappealing.

While the 2013 Smart Fortwo has some of the highest fuel economy ratings in the class and is very easy to park, most critics dislike the Fortwo’s performance. It comes with an underpowered, 70-horsepower, three-cylinder engine that reviewers say only delivers enough power for city driving. All models have a five-speed automated manual transmission, and critics dislike it. One auto reviewer even says it’s one of the worst transmissions on the market. Even when test drivers stick to city streets, most are disappointed with the Fortwo’s ride quality. It exhibits lots of body roll when cornering, and its suspension picks up too many road imperfections. According to the EPA, the Fortwo gets 34/38 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class, but low for such a small car.

The two-seat Smart Fortwo is one of the smallest cars on the market, but according to reviewers, it has a surprising amount of cabin space. They say that tall adults will have plenty of head- and legroom. Visibility is also good, but only in the coupe model. One test driver reports that when the convertible top is folded down, it hampers rear visibility. The Fortwo doesn’t have much cargo space, but reviewers say the available room is useful. Test drivers point out that the Fortwo’s cabin is made with a lot of hard plastics, but that’s common for a lot of small cars. The Fortwo, however, lacks standard features that are expected in this class. Air conditioning and a radio, for example, are optional. These amenities, as well as a surround sound system and navigation, can be added. Overall, reviewers think the Fortwo’s interior features are straightforward and easy to use.

"As ever, the ForTwo is an exercise in Euro-centric minimalism, sacrificing the space, refinement, performance, and dynamic ability of conventional minicars for Tinkerbell size and maneuverability. With its unusual styling and Mercedes-Benz connection, it's really more of a fashion accessory than practical daily transport. Then too, it's not exactly cheap or that stingy with gas." -- Consumer Guide "There are plenty of more useful four- and five-seat subcompacts for the same price. But they won't make the same super trendy statement as the smart." -- Motor Week (2008) "The 2012 Smart Fortwo, with its lack of refinement, rough transmission and unpleasant highway ride, is one of the least desirable cars on the market. There are plenty of other cars we'd recommend as a compact city car." -- Edmunds (2012) Smart Fortwo Pictures & Videos

    Other Cars to Consider

The Scion iQ is more expensive than the Smart Fortwo, but it has a lot more standard features including an upscale stereo, Bluetooth and 11 airbags, which is more than what the Fortwo offers. Though the iQ has four seats, reviewers don’t recommend sitting anyone in the back seats. However, that means the iQ’s folding rear seats expand the cargo area, offering more overall cargo room than the Fortwo.

The Mazda2 is more powerful than the Smart Fortwo, and test drivers like the Mazda2’s sharp handling. Though the Mazda2 is more expensive than the Fortwo, it offers seats for five, more cargo space and more standard features.

    Details: 2013 Smart Fortwo

The 2013 Smart Fortwo seats two people. It’s available in coupe and cabriolet (convertible) models. The coupe comes in passion and pure trims, while the cabriolet is only available in the passion trim. There’s also an all-electric version called the Fortwo Electric Drive, but it’s reviewed separately. The base Fortwo doesn’t come with a stereo or air conditioning, but these features are optional. A navigation system and a surround sound system are also available. The Fortwo hasn’t changed much since the 2008 model year, so this overview uses research and reviews from 2008 to 2013.

  • 2013 smart fortwo Review - Motor Trend

In its 15th year, the aging 2013 Smart fortwo is still a puzzling combination of mediocre features without really being the best at anything important. This tiny automobile can take two adults twelve blocks downtown, but not much else is offered for the price. An electric drive option is now available for those worrying about the environment or the price of gasoline going up, but the new worry of finding a plug is very real. In large cities, the Smart fortwo has an advantage when it comes to fitting into tiny parking spaces and navigating in slow-moving traffic, but that advantage might not seem so great when some competitors are now only about a foot longer and offer much more for the price.

    New For 2013

The Smart fortwo electric drive enters production. The EV is driven by a 55-kW motor powered by a 17.6 kW-hr lithium-ion battery and has an EPA-rated range of 63 miles in combined city/highway driving. The gasoline Fortwo, meanwhile, receives a minor face-lift to the tune of a new grille, bigger logo, and optional LED daytime running lights. There are also revised side skirts, rear aprons, new wheel options, and paint choices.

    Exterior

The 2013 Smart fortwo, just like the previous models, is a great conversation starter. With its total length of 106 inches and a width that would allow driving on some of the wider sidewalks, it is truly as small as an automobile can get. Its fun, immediately noticeable design appeals to some, while others just laugh at it.

In addition to its size, the available contrasting color options for the body panel and the safety cell make the Smart fortwo impossible to ignore. The 2013 model is offered in seven different body colors, and the Passion trim level (both the coupe and the cabriolet) gives the choice of silver or black for the outside of the tridion safety cell. The Pure coupe trim level has a solid roof, while the Passion coupe comes standard with a panoramic roof with sun screen. The top of the line Passion cabriolet boasts a fully automatic convertible top with glass rear window. The soft top is available in black, blue and red at no additional cost. With the addition of six different options for the wheels and five different colors for the interior, this trim level can be personalized to taste. The exterior of the new electric drive is essentially the same as the Passion, although it adds a green color option for the safety cell to make it that much more colorful.

    Interior & Cargo

The interior is surprisingly spacious for the driver and a single passenger, even those over six feet can feel that they have enough head and legroom. It gets a little crowded with wider people, but the amount of room is still impressive given the exterior dimensions of the vehicle. The small cargo room, however, is another reason why the 2013 Smart fortwo is still limited to short urban travel. The maximum 12 cubic feet of space cannot hold gear for a week-long camping trip, although the space instantly becomes more usable if the passenger stays at home: the passenger seat folds flat for additional cargo.

The instrument panel with its update in 2011 is still nothing fancy, but it is functional and goes well with the exterior. For those choosing the Smart fortwo for its low initial cost, the Pure coupe is as plain as it gets, the interior comes in plain black. And color options are not the only thing missing in the interior of this trim level: comfort and convenience features are also minimal.

The Passion trim level adds more colorful options and available leather seats. Radio and air-conditioning are standard, as is a rain and light sensor. A style package and a comfort package bring in more features, but these also increase the price, closing the gap between the Smart fortwo and competitors that offer a lot more for the base price. The technology package adds navigation and a surround sound system. Extra gauges in the center-top of the dashboard are added for the electric drive to conveniently keep an eye on the battery levels.

    Safety

The first thing everyone questions regarding the Smart fortwo is its safety. However, the engineers at Mercedes-Benz ensure that this tiny vehicle meets the highest safety standards, and crash-testing comes back with the highest results for both front- and side impacts. While it might not give the impression of a safe vehicle, and it can feel a little intimidating to leave the city and try to drive alongside semis on the highway, in reality, driver and passenger protection is comparable to other compact vehicles. In case of an accident, the reinforced, high-strength, tridion safety cell evenly distributes crash energy, and full-size airbags inflate all around. An electronic stability program and anti-lock brakes are standard on every model.

    Driving Experience

The 2013 Smart fortwo is still a city car. A 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine powers all trim levels, which is enough for an output of 70 horsepower and 68 lb-ft of torque, or a satisfactory experience in an urban environment. (The electric drive option is rated for slightly higher numbers.) The five-speed, automated manual transmission takes some getting used to, and the steering wheel shift paddles on the Passion trim level are lost if the cruise control package is added.

This tiny vehicle is capable of cruising on the highway if it must, but it does not offer much comfort. The interior becomes noisy, there is just not enough power to attempt passing, and any crosswind or gusts from larger vehicles give the feeling of vulnerability on the road. However, for the city-dweller often fighting for parking space, the 2013 Smart fortwo can be an option with its immediately recognizable, youthful, modern exterior.
