A Japanese sports car developed in conjunction with Toyota and Scion and sold on the market under the name GT86, FR-S and BRZ with the three cars being differentiated by barely more than badging, wheels and the shape of their radiator grilles. The purist sports car is the latest from Asia and available to us for a drive test at Litchfield Motors, one of the first tuners selling upgrades. The Subaru BRZ is a sports car built the way sports cars used to be built: lightweight, visually appealing, near surgical steering precision and rear-wheel drive. It’s clearly not the fastest, the most powerful, nor even the sexiest two-door coupe in the business, but somehow it has the ability to share its sheer driving pleasure in a way not many cars are able to. Everything is focused on the joy of... This means that our tester was fitted with a 2. 0 liter direct injection petrol engine in the nose producing a stock performance of 197bhp and 205Nm. The available transmissions are either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual gearbox. The BRZ awaiting our arrival at the farm located between Cheltenham and Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire was not a stock version available via the local Subaru importer, but a right-hand drive model used by Litchfield Motors in the UK as their... Alpine’s Antony Villain is the latest car designer to accept TopGear ’s sketch challenge. BJ Baldwin’s Chevy Silverado monster truck has just arrived behind us, star of a gazillion YouTube views and the throbbing, thunderous antithesis of Alpine’s elegant and elfin Celebration concept car. Actually, it sort of sums up the scale of Alpine’s challenge, as it tries to gain traction in a very noisy world. The brand is here in force at FoS, fielding a handful of cars from its 60-year history, including 1978’s outright Le Mans winner, the A442b. Problem is, unless you’re French and/or of a certain age and geeky inclination, you probably don’t know... Is it Renault’s performance sub-brand. As Villain’s pencil skates across my notepad, it’s clear that the Celebration – first revealed at Le Mans last month – is a thinly disguised production car. Renault will use the real thing to relaunch the Alpine brand in about 18 months’ time, and it will be light, compact, and mid-engined. Think Porsche Cayman or Alfa Romeo 4C – punchy, accessible, shrunken supercars. Villain, who works closely with Renault’s design boss Laurens van den Acker, is core to the team that has relocated the company’s aesthetic mojo, and there’s obviously a ton of motorsport expertise in the wider Renault firmament.
