2005-10 Nissan Truck, SUV Owners Plagued by Transmission Failures - MotorTrend Magazine

Unfortunately that’s what owners of 2005-2010 Nissan Frontiers, Pathfinders, and Xterras have been going through, when radiator coolant leaks into the automatic transmission. In October of last year, Nissan extended warranty coverage on the radiators of 2005-2010 Frontiers, Pathfinders and Xterras from three years or 36,000 miles, to eight years or 80,000 miles. The New York Times reports that Nissan said only “a small percentage” of its Frontiers, Pathfinders and Xterras would be affected. The problem was caused by a cracked oil cooler tube, causing a coolant leak. Fast forward to today, and many Nissan truck and SUV owners are reporting that the radiator issues have affected the vehicles transmissions, causing premature failure. Lance Wiggins, Technical Director of the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association told The New York Times that what’s happening is the radiator cooler tanks are rupturing, forcing coolant into the five-speed automatic through the transmission... When Nissan notified owners of the radiator problems, they allegedly failed to acknowledge that the issue could allow coolant to enter the transmission and take it out of commission. Also, by moving the coverage from 36,000 miles to only 80,000 miles, it left many Frontier, Pathfinder, and Xterra owners out to dry, because many early buyers had already driven past the 80,000 mile cutoff. Nissan Can't Appeal Calif. Engine Defect Design Ruling - Law360 (subscription)

cannot appeal a decision denying its attempt to escape a putative class action over allegedly defective timing chain tensioning systems while the case is pending, saying an interlocutory appeal could prolong the litigation. District Judge Dean D. Pregerson said Nissan should wait until after the case concludes to appeal his April decision finding the automaker should not be freed from the suit because it had authority over the manufacturing of the vehicles at issue. "I purchased a 2007 used SE in 2013 and have had a good experience so far with it (now 2015). This is my second Xterra and sorry to see them go after this year. But the truck does eat gas. Plenty of power in the renowned 4.0 V6 taken out of the older Z car. I am over 6 ft tall and this is one of the few vehicles I feel comfortable driving. The driving position is a sitting position and not a lying down position with legs extended forward as in the Forerunner, which is made for short people. The X is the best looking SUV I have seen other than the Jeep G Cherokee too which is twice the cost. It has been reliable other than replacing the power window motor in the front passenger side which set me back $450."

"I love my truck! Seats are easy to change from sitting to flat-plenty of space for seating, both front and back. Drives awesome--a tad bit tippy-feeling if it is empty, but otherwise, rides like a truck--meaty, not "floating" all over the road. Handles speed great and eats up bumpy and 4x4 driving like a race horse. 4x4 driving during winter even on icy roads is great. Engine and power are great when its needed--Best vehicle I have ever owned."

Needed daily driver comfort and amenities and weekend capability on the beach and trails. The Xterra is the perfect combination. Able to take everything I throw at it off-road and comfortable for the daily work commute. Leather interior, technological amenities, room for passengers and cargo. This is a keeper. Only critique is gas mileage but you know that when you purchase. Unfortunate that this is the last year of the Xterra."

"The 2005 xterra was the fastest 0-60 SUV in production that year. Faster than the Porsche Cayenne. Even after 100,000 with regular oil changes it still rips when I want it to. I learned of the flaw with the radiator and had a trans-cooler put in for $300 before disaster struck. I also had to sink $1200 into the transmission and for that I give it an 8 in quality. Compared to some other brands $1500 over 10 years is pretty darn good. What I like best about this SUV is its solid build. It drives like a truck, not like a car with a truck body. It has alot of torque and climbs and four-wheels like no other. Very functional interior for outdoors or events, especially with the rubber floor mats and hard plastic fold down hatch. Lets just say that when I am ready to trade this one in, I'm getting another."

    Review

My issue is not with my xterra (still going strong at 140k miles), rather with Nissan's apparent unwillingness to stand behind their vehicles. I purchased my 2005 xterra from the same dealer I service it at. I have, from the outset, had repeated problems with the fuel sensor gauge,. Because the issue, until now, has never caused a signal in their system check, they have refused to replace the required part. Their attitude when I complained -essentially -too bad -we have no responsibility to fix what our system check does not designate. At around 105,000 miles, I heard of an issue, through a lawyer, to do with the

    Best Features

radiator. The warranty period had just expired, the dealer knew of the potential issue, yet never told me. The response -too bad -past the warranty period -fix the car yourself or sell it. I see other reviewers expressing a similar sentiment. Pity -I like the car and will keep it. However, for me, the purchase itself is just part of the overall 'package'. More important in the long run is the quality of service and attitude of the manufacturer to their customers. They have lost me as a future client

    Worst Features

Customer service at the dealer level has to improve. Equally as important, Nissan needs to understand that, for the cost of a fuel gauge sensor ($575) and a radiator($800) they have lost not just my future acquisitions, but those of my wife and, to the degree I can affect them, friends and associates

  • 2005 Nissan Xterra Road Test – Review – Car and Driver

Nissan knows all about the impact of daring styling. Sometimes the bullet nicks the Nike, as it did with the Hey-look-at-me! Quest minivan. And sometimes the cash register rings merrily, as it did with the Xterra. This lumpy-looking SUV—a roughrider atop a veteran compact-pickup chassis—came out of nowhere in 1999, flaunting a portfolio of imaginative design fillips and active-lifestyle promises.

Remember the step-up roofline topped by a roof rack complete with a dirty-stuff compartment, said to be perfect for 40,000-mile underwear, roadkill armadillos, and other necessities too grungy for even a young male to haul inside?

Remember the oddly significant Xterra bump on the tail that turns out to have no function except keeping the liftgate from looking boring? "It suggests a first-aid kit," says Nissan.

The youthful strivers loved the whole swaggering act, to the tune of 67,799 copies sold in 2003. A price cleanly under 20 large for the four-cylinder base version didn't hurt.

So, for 2005, Nissan finds itself with a valuable horse in the youth market. Time to raise the ante. This new Xterra is a comprehensively upgraded machine with the same "adventure" attitude of the original. It shares a body-on-frame platform with the pricier Pathfinder SUV and the new Frontier pickup; they, in turn, share certain frame components with the full-size Titan pickup and lunker Armada SUV. As a consequence, Xterra weight goes up more than 400 pounds. Against that bad news, consider this: The new model is saying "aaahhhh" for a lusty Titan V-8 as soon as Nissan decides to lower the hoist.

Despite the stronger skeleton, the Xterra hasn't bulked up much, just 0.7 inch longer to 178.7 overall (8.9 inches shorter than the Pathfinder), although the wheelbase is up two inches. It has definitely lost the narrow-gauge look of the original, however, as it gained 2.4 inches in beam to 72.8.

Gone, too, are the old 2.4 four and 3.3 V-6 choices, both replaced by a third-generation VQ V-6 (standard in the Altima, 350Z, and Infiniti G35) stroked to increase displacement to 4.0 liters, and it makes 265 horsepower. A six-speed manual and a five-speed automatic are the transmission choices, driving either the two rear wheels or a part-time four-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled transfer case.
