After years of enviously watching parent company Ford ride the wave of the surging hybrid vehicle market with its Escape hybrid, Mazda finally gets what it should have had all along: a hybrid version of the mechanically identical Tribute. To be called the Tribute HEV, the environmentally friendly cute 'ute will make Mazda the last Japanese brand to offer a hybrid vehicle, even if it's not a real Mazda, when it's launched sometime toward the middle of this year. In the meantime, Mazda continues research on its hydrogen-powered RX-8 and hydrogen hybrid Mazda5 back in Japan, indicating that Mazda might not be as late to the hydrogen party as it was to the hybrid one. I suppose it's nice that a normal interior package can have $6000 worth of technology to make about 10 mpg in the city and 10 mpg on the highway better than a regular four-banger mini SUV. So this appliance gets better fuel economy. I agree with editor-in-chief Angus MacKenzie when he wonders why anyone would choose a boring hybrid appliance when you can have a sporty turbodiesel rocket (like they have in Europe) that gets better fuel economy. Final thought has to do with where this fits in with the huge crossover push of the CX-7 and CX-9. This is the throwback. Might be cool technology in the CX-7, with a turbo on the little four. Now out of production, the plug-in Prius will be replaced by a new model that will go on sale sometime after the... But the new-generation Prius Plug-In (which might conceivably be called Prius Prime ) will be even more important than its predecessor, which lagged the 2010 model it was based on by two years. Developed in parallel with the new 2016 Prius hybrid, the new plug-in will likely have a longer electric range. In August 2013, Satoshi Ogiso, Toyota's chief engineer and the man in charge of developing the next Prius range, acknowledged that Prius Plug-In drivers wanted greater electric range. That number may have to rise to meet stricter zero-emission vehicle sales requirements in California and a dozen other states, starting in 2018.
