DETROIT -- Automakers are again taking a run at accelerating vehicle development, this time with an assist from 3-D printing. The latest example comes from Honda, whose just-launched 2016 Pilot is the product of a new computer-driven process in which the automaker eliminated hand-built prototypes. The approach cut "several months" from the nearly three-year effort from when the new Pilot was envisioned to the start of mass production, said Jeff Tomko, president of Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, the assembly complex in Lincoln where the... The new Pilot was developed "in a virtual world," Tomko said at a briefing here. In the last decade, Toyota accelerated development in a push to launch a barrage of new models around the globe, part of a drive to expand sales and pass General Motors as the world's largest automaker by sales volume. 1 Japanese automaker grew rapidly but its breakneck pace also brought quality problems, among them the accelerator pedal and floor mat issues that were tied to the company's sudden-acceleration crisis in 2010. 21-year-old Missoula man dies in I-90 crash during storm - The Missoulian

A 21-year-old Missoula man died in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 near the Idaho border during Monday night's violent windstorm. Roman Zylawy said Chris Ramsey died after being transported to Missoula from the crash scene at mile marker 5 near Lookout Pass. Zylawy said several drivers hit parts of the trees, causing undercarriage and wheel damage. Zylawy said the co-driver of the semi got out to set up hazard signs to warn other drivers. Minutes later, Ramsey, who Zylawy said was driving a 2009 Honda Ridgeline, hit the tree at high speed and suffered significant blunt force trauma. The highway patrolman said Ramsey was brought to Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, where he was pronounced dead. The co-driver of the semi is recovering from surgery in Spokane, where he was taken after the crash. The driver of the other car that hit the semi co-driver was taken to Missoula and remains in critical condition. Despite the dangers created by Monday night's storm, Missoula County 9-1-1 dispatchers and first responders saw very few serious injuries, said Adriane Beck, director of the county’s Office of Emergency Management.
