There are times when you find yourself behind the wheel of the Ford Ranger when you can forget you are driving a ute. Once a rough and tumble workhorse, the modern ute has become a family car for many Australians, and Ford has recognised that and focused on making the new Ranger "smarter" and "more efficient" as well as "tougher". The biggest changes have been made to the steering (introducing a new electronic power steering system) and suspension (unique tunes for each grade and bodystyle) in a bid to make it feel less like a working vehicle and more like a modern SUV. Driving the high-specification XLT - which sits just below the flagship Wildtrack - it strikes you how quiet and refined the cabin is. We have fully explained the differences , but for the Ford Ranger there are two types of traction control system (TCS):. That detects when a wheel spins, then applies the brakes to just that wheel, which sends torque (“drive”) to the other wheel, thereby allowing the Ranger to maintain forward momentum, and it’s what you want when you’re offroad. E-TCS , which is the Engine Traction Control system. This is a mechanism that will reduce engine torque if the driven wheels are both spinning, thereby regaining traction as madly spinning wheels mean you’re going nowhere. It kicks in when the optimum wheel slip ratio is exceeded, which means when the computer decides there’s too much torque going to the wheels for the traction available. Like any similar traction control system, B-TCS is a huge improvement for the Ranger’s off-road capability, but what about E-TCS. Happily, that’s been thought of. In 2WD High (4×2 drive mode) both E-TCS and B-TCS work, but E-TCS has the priority as it provides more “refined intervention”, according to Ford. In 4X4 low both DSC and E-TCS are entirely disabled, leaving B-TCS to do its best work, and contrary to received wisdom that won’t slow you down. Source: practicalmotoring.com.au

    Ford four-wheel-drive (4WD) systems allow a vehicle's engine to send power to all four wheels, instead of the front wheels or rear wheels only. Many 4WD vehicles can be switched back and forth between rear-wheel drive using a switch or a gear lever in the cab. Some require lock-out devices on the front hubs to be turned manually to engage four-wheel drive.

    Ford four-wheel drive systems rely on a transfer case adjacent to the vehicle's transmission and the front output shaft that powers the front wheels when four-wheel drive is engaged. The transfer case switch is actuated either physically or electronically by controls in the passenger area. Some systems use locking hubs on the front wheels to engage the front axle and differential when four-wheel drive is in use but disengage it when the vehicle is in two-wheel drive, thus saving wear and tear on components in the front end.

    History

    Ford began offering the outsourced "Marmon-Herrington All Wheel" system on it's new line of F-Series trucks in 1948, utilizing technology developed for military vehicles during the Second World War. In 1959, it brought four-wheel drive production in-house, with several systems available over the years, notably the Borg-Warner Control Trac and Control Trac II and the Haldex Traction. Four-wheel drive was limited to trucks and SUVs until 1986, when the 4x4 Ford Scorpio passenger car was introduced.

    Difference from AWD

    Four-wheel drive is not the same as all-wheel drive (AWD). Four-wheel drive vehicles have an option called low range that sends more torque to the wheels but at lower speeds. Many also have a neutral option in the transfer case that disconnects all four wheels from the engine. All-wheel drive vehicles can't be switched back and forth between two- and four-wheel drive, nor do they have low-range or neutral options.

    Problems

    Older Ford four-wheel-drive systems like the Borg Warner Control Trac I cannot be used on dry pavement without damaging the drive train. As the vehicle turns and changes speed on dry pavement, stresses build up between the different wheels, causing wheel jumping and torsion on the drive shaft and axles. Some systems also lose power to the gripping wheels when one or more wheels lose traction.

The operator can switch between 2WD and4WD HIGH modes at any speed. To engage or disengage 4WD LOW range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL(automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal must be depressed (manual transmission).The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electric shift motor, informs the four-wheel drive (4WD) control module of the transfer case position.The digital transmission range (TR) sensor is located on the LH side of the automatic transmission; this sensor informs the 4WD control module when the automatic transmission is in the NEUTRALposition.The clutch pedal position (CPP) switch is present on manual transmission vehicles; this switch informs the 4WD control module when the clutch pedal is depressed.The electric shift motor is mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case.     Transfer Case - Electronic Shift

    The four-wheel drive electronic shift-on-the-fly feature electrically shifts the vehicle transfer case between 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW. The system mode is selected by the operator throughthe mode select switch (MSS) on the instrument panel. The operator is informed which mode the system is in by two instrument cluster indicators: one for 4WD HIGH which appears as 4WD HIGH,

When shifting in or out of 4WD LOW, the four-wheel drive (4WD) control modulerequires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal be applied, and the transmission be in NEUTRAL (automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal be depressed (manualtransmission).The gearmotor encoder assembly is mounted externally on the transfer case.     There are times when you find yourself behind the wheel of the Ford Ranger when you can forget you are driving a ute.

    Once a rough and tumble workhorse, the modern ute has become a family car for many Australians, and Ford has recognised that and focused on making the new Ranger "smarter" and "more efficient" as well as "tougher".

    The biggest changes have been made to the steering (introducing a new electronic power steering system) and suspension (unique tunes for each grade and bodystyle) in a bid to make it feel less like a working vehicle and more like a modern SUV; not surprisingly given it was developed alongside the new Everest seven-seater.

    Driving the high-specification XLT - which sits just below the flagship Wildtrack - it strikes you how quiet and refined the cabin is. There is very little tyre noise and only slight wind noise around the windscreen pillars, so much so you could be forgiven for thinking it could be in an SUV like the Territory.

    The ride in the XLT is equally impressive, offering a level of compliance and control not usually associated with a ute. It is still a little bouncy at the rear, but that is to be expected because it still needs to be capable of carrying a load, but overall it feels more SUV-like than ever before.

    But it should be more SUV-like, given it has an SUV-like price. The XLT Double Cab 3.2-litre 4x4 has a starting price of $56,590 plus on-road costs.

    That, though, is near the top of an extensive range that includes three cab styles (Single, Super and Double), two body styles (cab chassis and pick up), two engines (2.2-litre and 3.2-litre turbo diesels) plus the option of manual and automatic and 4x4 or 4x2. Plus there is the 4X2 Hi-Rider to ensure as many potential customers are covered as possible.

    Pricing begins at $27,390 for the XL 2.2-litre Single Cab 4x2, which is more expensive than the entry-level Toyota HiLux, Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara.

    We spent the majority of our time in the XLT Dual Cab but also sampled the XLS 2.2-litre and Wildtrack.

    The 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo diesel features a smaller turbocharger in this updated model but the performance figures remain almost identical, producing 147kW of power and healthy 470Nm of torque. It can be noisy at times, especially at cold start and under hard acceleration, but at speed it ticks along quietly. The 2.2-litre has a more modest 118kW and 385Nm and lacks the same shove as its larger sibling, especially in the bigger, heavier Double Cab models.

    While the Ranger may be more on-road focused it remains a capable workhorse in its various specifications. A few hours at Werribee four-wheel drive park showcased the Ranger's off-road prowess.

    It still offers a 28 degree approach angle, 25 degree departure angle, 230mm of ground clearance and 800mm wading capability. The 4x2 Hi-Rider and all 4x4 models come standard with a rear diff lock and Hill Descent Control.

    It is on sealed roads, however, where the likes of the XLT and Wildtrack will spend the majority of their time and Ford has worked to not only improve the ride but also the interior presentation and technology.

    The cabin has been restyled and Ford's latest SYNC2 infotainment system brings an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen to the centre of the dash with satellite navigation with live traffic updates, DAB digital radio and a wifi hotspot.

    The larger screen gives the XLT and Wildtrack models a more upmarket feel but the rest of the range has to make do with Ford's older system that has a smaller 3.5-inch screen and requires more physical buttons for a slightly busier appearance.

    Another disappointment with the interior, and a surprising one given it was developed alongside the Everest SUV, is the lack of reach adjustment on the steering column.

    But they are small criticisms of an otherwise impressive interior that brings greater levels of comfort to the workhorse market.

    Ford has made a big deal of its new suite of active safety features for the Ranger which include Active Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist. It points out that the technology is "not currently available in the Toyota HiLux and do not even feature in some $60,000 luxury passenger cars."

    However, technically speaking those technologies are not available on the $60,090 Ranger Wildtrack - unless buyers spend an extra $600 for the optional Tech Pack.

    While Ford should be commended for bringing these potentially life-saving technologies to the commercial segment it would have made a bolder statement if they came standard on at least the Wildtrack.

    More disappointingly, a potentially life-saving reversing camera is only fitted as standard on the Wildtrack and is part of an $1100 option on the XLT, bundled with the Tech Pack.Because the other models use Ford's older SYNC1 infotainment system a reversing camera isn't even available as an option.

    It is blight on an otherwise excellent offering from Ford. The Ranger has been a rare sales success story for the blue oval in recent years and with good reason. The revised model range brings improved on-road manners while still retaining its hard-working capabilities as well as improving interior comfort and increasing technology.

    But with new utes from Nissan and Mitsubishi already on the ground this year and the new Mazda BT-50 and Toyota HiLux to follow, the Ranger has its work cut out for itself to stay near the head of the pack.

    I have a 99 ranger with the electronic 4 wheel drive switch system that is not working. With the switch set to 4 wheel high, the hubs do not lock, the front drive shaft does not turn, and sometimes the indictor lights will flash. With the truck running, and the switch turned on, I have pulled the vacuum hose off each wheel one at a time. There does not appear to be any vacuum. I have the soliniond out on the bench, and when power is applied it does sound like it is switching. I don't have any wiring or vacuum diagrams of the system. Any ideas what may be wrong or where I can get a set of wiring of vacuum diagrams.
